Enhanced Transition – from Year 6 to Year 7
At St Cuthbert Mayne School, we recognise that transition can be a difficult time for some, due to a child’s own individual additional needs. We will continue to take steps to ensure that the progression from primary to secondary is as smooth as possible, allowing students to have their needs met.
The SEN Code of Practice emphasises the key elements relevant for young people at a transition point, which are:
- Preparation
- Working with parents around planning the transition
- Reviewing support provided in the current school
- Joint planning to undertake a supported transition
Transition begins in the summer term with the Year 6 students. We have strong links with our feeder primary schools and we share information on students who may need support additional to, or different from, Ordinarily Available Inclusive Provision (OAIP). support. The information provided ensures that all staff at St Cuthbert Mayne are fully prepared for the pastoral and academic needs of all of our pupils.
We will ensure that students get to know key members of staff, particularly those from the Learning Support and Pastoral Teams. We would like students to be able to familiarise themselves with the layout of the school, as well as be as familiar as possible with expectations around uniform and behaviour.
For students with Education Health & Care Plans (EHCP’s) and high/complex needs, we offer additional enhanced transition sessions, with the aim of making sure that transition to secondary school for these students is as smooth as possible. Should students need these sessions, this will be decided jointly by StCM and the feeder primary school, and parents/carers will be contacted about this.
We understand the importance of making transition an easy and friendly process, as we are aware that if students are confident and happy they are more likely to be successful and make good progress.
