Art, Design & Photography

Key Stage 3

In Year 7 students will be introduced to a range of mediums, processes and techniques that they may not have used before. Students are shown how to analyse the work of others and respond to the work of artists.

Year 8 builds on this experience, introducing a range of new techniques and providing an avenue for personal expression through a personal investigation in the summer term.

Key Stage 4

Supported in their decision to continue Art at examination level, students will follow the Fine Art course offered by AQA.

The GCSE syllabus covers a range of activities and in-depth assignments which encourage students to develop their observational, research and investigative skills through the exploration of different media and techniques. They will be guided in their selection of appropriate contextual references and helped to express ideas, thoughts and feelings in the realisation of finished pieces.

Educational visits enhance the students work and the most successful students will spend extra time in the art rooms during lunchtime and/or after school.

Key Stage 5

Students will follow the Art, Craft and Design programme offered by AQA. This broad-based course explores practical, critical and contextual work through a range of 2D and/or 3D media and processes.

Work at this level is challenging and highly individual. Students are expected to develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops. Recording of ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions is a major focus, allowing students to reflect critically on their work and progress in order to successfully present a personal and meaningful response. Educational visits enhance the sixth form syllabus.

All sixth form students are expected to continue work during private study periods, lunchtime and/or after school.
