Physical Education

The Physical Education curriculum is taught in six half term blocks per academic year.

Students are taught 2 sports each half term from the following activities; Rugby, Hockey, Football, Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Handball, Dodgeball, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Lacrosse, Benchball, Handball, Trampolining, Vaulting, Dance, Outdoor Education, Fitness, Volleyball, Athletics, Cricket and Rounders.

Students are taught in single-sex groups and follow national curriculum specifications. The aim is to encourage participation and develop fundamental and transferable skills that can be applied across a number of sports. Students develop confidence in competitive situations and leadership roles, and are given the opportunity to develop their skills further in extra curricular activities.

In Key Stage 3 students experience 4 lessons of PE a fortnight and in Key Stage 4 this reduces to 3 lessons of PE a fortnight, they may also study BTEC Tech Award in Sport alongside these hours which is an additional 5 lessons a fortnight. Sixth form students have a recreational PE session once a week and have the opportunity to study for a Level 3 CTEC Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity.

Year 10 & 11 BTEC TECH AWARD IN SPORT (Optional subject)

Students explore the different types and provision of sport and physical activity available for different types of participants, barriers to participation and ways to overcome these barriers to increase participation in sport and physical activity. They will also research equipment and technological advances in a chosen sport or physical activity and how to prepare our bodies for participation in sport and physical activity.

Students investigate the components of fitness and their effect on performance, take part in practical sport, explore the role of officials in sport and learn to apply methods and sporting drills to improve other participants’ sporting performance.

Students are introduced to and develop an understanding of the importance of fitness and the different types of fitness for performance in sport and physical activity. They will also develop an understanding of the body and fitness testing.

The BTEC Tech Award in Sport is a programme that is intended to introduce students to the sports industry and to develop the practical skills necessary for successful employment in a range of sport and leisure industries.

The course is made up of 3 components – 2 coursework units weighted at 30% each via Pearson set assignments, and one external exam worth 40% of the final mark. Assignments may take the form of documents, presentations, video evidence, practical demonstrations and sports leadership.

  • Component 1: Preparing Participants to Take Part in Sport and Physical Activity – Internal assessment (Pearson Set Assignment) with 3 tasks. Externally moderated.
  • Component 2: Taking Part and Improving Other Participants’ Sporting Performance – Internal assessment (Pearson Set Assignment) with 4 tasks. Externally moderated
  • Component 3: Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants’ Performance in Sport and Physical Activity – External synoptic exam. Externally marked – 1hr 30

The Sports facilities include: Large Sports Hall, Fitness Suite, Secondary Hall, 4 outdoor netball courts, Grass pitches, grass grids, a range of sports equipment, PE technician.

Extra-Curricular Activities Offered:

We pride ourselves in offering an extensive extra-curricular sports programme with opportunities to further develop existing skills across a range of sporting disciplines. Students can involve themselves at both a recreational or a competitive level.

We play a large number of sports fixtures on a weekly basis at both local and county level having boys and girls teams in all of the core sports. We enter all local festivals and central venue leagues and compete well against other local schools.

We are heavily involved in developing leadership and run an extensive sports ambassador programme. Students are identified in the lower school and work closely with our younger students as well as our feeder primary schools supporting their PE and Sport through coaching, officiating and organising festivals. Students’ progress through the programme until they leave at the end of year 13 having developed excellent employability skills.

There are a large number of extra-curricular activities that students can involve themselves in both during lunchtimes and after school. These include participating, coaching and officiating opportunities in: football, rugby, netball, basketball, hockey, trampolining, badminton, volleyball, dodgeball, cricket, rounders, handball and athletics.
