A Level – AQA Mathematics
To succeed in this beautiful subject you will need to have the passion to understand concepts, solve problems and use the language and notation of mathematics.
Mathematics is highly regarded by higher educational establishments & employers. It shows students are resilient, independent and logical problem solvers.
What will I study?
You will continue to study algebra, trigonometry and co-ordinate geometry further. You will learn the new areas of calculus, and explore further numerical applications and methods such as:
• Mechanics – The emphasis is placed on modeling a real problem mathematically and solving it
• Statistics – The ability to use mathematic methods to sort and interpret data of all different types
The gaining of new concepts is organized through lessons and private study which is designed to give practice and consolidation, building upon prior knowledge .
We encourage that you apply your knowledge
in related, though often unfamiliar situations. There will be on-going home learning tasks and roughly ten assessed pieces of work per year based on examination questions. It is crucial that you keep up-to-date with your learning to ensure you understand challenging concepts before moving on.
BEFORE STUDY:
An algebra assessment will also be undertaken by all students wishing to take the course at the beginning of Year 12. Suitable revision materials are provided over the holidays and the outcome of this will determine suitability for the course.
Students will need to have attained at least a Grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics.
ASSESSMENT:
Paper 1: Written Exam 2 hrs
Paper 2: Written Exam 2 hrs
Paper 3: Written Exam 2 hrs
All examinations take place in the June exam series at the end of the academic year.
